Penggunaan Used To Infinitive, Be Used To, Dan Would Infinitive.

Dalam bahasa Inggris, saat kita ingin membicarakan wacana kebiasaan atau aktivitas yang berulang-ulang di era lalu, kita sanggup memakai ungkapan "used to + infinitive" yang menunjukan bahwa aktivitas atau pernyataan tersebut terjadi di era lampau. Selain itu, kita juga sanggup memakai "would + infinitive" untuk tujuan yang sama.

Tetapi ada perbedaan antara keduanya yaitu kita sanggup memakai "used to + infinitive" untuk menyampaikan suatu pernyataan di era lampau yang tidak lagi berlaku akan tetapi kita tidak sanggup memakai "would + infinitive" untuk mengungkapkan pernyataan itu.

Misalnya, untuk menyampaikan "dia dulu memiliki rambut panjang" maka ungkapan yang paling cocok dipakai ialah "She used to have long hair" bukan "She would have long hair".

Used to + Infinitive

(+) S + (used to + infinitive) + o.c

(-) S + didn't + (use to + infinitive) + o.c

(?) Did + S + (use to + infinitive) + o.c ?

Example :

1. (+) She used to wake up early. (but now she doesn't wake up early)
   (-) She didn't use to wake up early.
   (?) Did she use to wake up early?
   
   
2. (+) He used to eat cereal for breakfast.
   (-) He didn't use to eat cereal for breakfast.
   (?) Did he use to eat cereal for breakfast?
   
   
3. (+) Your brother used to go to the movies.
   (-) Your brother didn't use to go to the movies.
   (?) Did your brother use to go to the movies?
   
   
4. (+) My mother used to have long hair.
   (-) My mother didn't use to have long hair.
   (?) Did my mother use to have long hair?
   
   
5. (+) I used to see my grandmother on monday.
   (-) I didn't use to see my grandmother on monday.
   (?) Did I use to see my grandmother on monday?

Ingat :
Pada kalimat negatif dan interrogatif, "used to" berubah jadi "use to".

Be Used to + Verb-ing

(+) S + (be used to + verb-ing) + o.c

(-) S + be + not + (used to + verb-ing) + o.c

(?) Be + S + (used to + verb-ing) + o.c ?

Ungkapan ini dipakai untuk mengungkapkan sesuatu aktivitas yang kita sudah terbiasa melakukannya.
Example :

1. (+) I am used to going to my school on foot, it is not too far for me.
   
   (-) I am not used to going to my school on foot, it is too far for me.
   (?) Are you used to going to your school on foot?
   
   
2. (+) He is used to sleeping late at night, so he doesn't mind doing it.
   (-) He isn't used to sleeping late at night, so he gets hard doing it.
   (?) Is he used to sleeping late at night?

Note :
Pada kalimat negatif dan interrogative, "used to" tidak berubah.

Would + Infinitive

(+) S + (would + infinitive) + o.c

(-) S + (wouldn't + infinitive) + o.c

(?) Would + S +  infinitive + o.c ?

Example :

1. (+) When he was a student, he would go to library on friday.
   
   (-) When he was a student, he wouldn't go to library on friday.
   (?) When he was a student, Would he go to library on friday?
   
   
2. (+) When my brother lived in Jakarta, he would send me a book twice a month.
   
   (-) When my brother lived in Jakarta, he wouldn't send me a book twice a month.
   (?) Would He send me a book twice a month?

Note :
Ungkapan "would + infinitive" umumnya dipakai untuk menceritakan aktivitas di era lampau akan tetapi jarang dipakai untuk mengungkapkan suatu pernyataan menyerupai :
They would live in Medan.
I would have long hair.
She would get a flat nose.
