Basically, forming a questions in English is not so difficult if we understand the rules. To change a positive sentence to interrogative sentence, we must recognize the auxilary verbs (verbs) that take a part in the change of sentence's structure.

In general, we always make a question in positive one. In this section, we will study how to change the positive questions to negative one. Forming a negative questions is basically combining a negative sentence and interrogative sentence.

We can use auxilary verbs or 'be'  in negative form to form a negative question. To answer the negative questions, we have only to say yes or no in short answers or long answers.

Forming Negative Questions

Be (am, is, are)
  1. (+) She is a good teacher.
    (-) She is not a good teacher.
    (+?) Is she a good teacher?
    (-?) Isn't she a good teacher?
    (?-) Is she not a good teacher?

  2. (+) My father is a farmer.
    (-) My father is not a farmer.
    (+?) Is your father a farmer?
    (-?) Isn't your father a farmer?
    (?-) Is your father not a farmer?

  3. (+) Rudy and Mike are in my house.
    (-) Rudi and Mike are not in my house.
    (+?) Are Rudy and Mike in your house?
    (-?) Aren't Rudy and Mike in your house?
    (?-) Are Rudy not and Mike in your house?

  4. (+) That is her cat.
    (-) That is not her cat.
    (+?) Is that her cat?
    (-?) Isn't that her cat?
    (-?) Is that not her cat?

  5. (+) Those are my friend in senior high school
    (-) Those are not my friend in senior high school
    (+?) Are those your friends in senior high school?
